“Compact TES of the Future: from Challenges to Opportunities” Workshop at ICSET 2025
Join the Hystore project and the TES – Thermal Energy Storage Cluster at the workshop “Compact TES of the Future: from Challenges to Opportunities” that will take place on 24 June 2025 in the context of the International Congress on Sustainable Energy and related Technologies (ICSET) 2025 in Lipari (Italy)

24 June | 14:00 – 16:00 | “Doride” Room – Aktea Resort, Lipari (IT)
The Compact TES of the Future: from Challenges to Opportunities workshop will explore the innovative advancements and challenges in developing compact and efficient thermal energy storage (TES) solutions for residential buildings and organised by the TES Cluster, which is formed by four pioneering European projects: ThumbsUp, Best Storage, Hystore, and ECHO.
Ilaria Marotta, from HYSTORE’s partner – CNR, will intervene, speaking about “Flexibility potential of novel technologies: a Model Predictive Control framework for advanced Thermal Energy Storage”
These initiatives are dedicated to revolutionising energy storage technologies, addressing critical issues like material efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and integration with renewable energy sources. As we explore the complexities of thermal energy storage, participants will benefit from the expertise and insights of leading professionals in the field. We will delve into the latest research findings, technological breakthroughs, and proven best practices—all focused on advancing a more sustainable energy future.
This workshop is a follow-up of the previous event “Thermal Energy Storage System workshop” held in Savona (Italy) on 6 September 2023, in the framework of the international conference SUstainable PolyEnergy generation and HaRvesting – SUPEHR23. During this event, the four projects collected feedback from experts and researchers to enhance the quality and functionalities of Thermal Energy Storage solutions they intended to develop. Four common challenges among the projects were identified:
– Power-to-heat capabilities unlocked by the four projects’ TES,
– Building integration and installation,
– Tenants’ perspective of TES
– How to model TES.
At the beginning of the workshop, the different projects will present the status of their technical activities, how they have overcome the common challenges identified in Savona in 2023, and which new challenges they face to accomplish their missions. An interactive session will be dedicated to asking for participants’ feedback to improve their future work.
